GAH!

So angry and upset at this point.
So it was about 6AM, I was in my bedroom, sleeping like a baby, and I nearly had a heart attack when I woke up to a loud "CRASH!" in my bedroom, 3 feet away. I literally jumped out of bed as soon as I heard it, I was so freaked out since it was so loud, and I looked over the edge of the bed...
And my Mini Advance was on the floor, the plastic cracked, and all 7 eggs smashed (and trust me, it wasn't pretty seeing 2 week old fertile and developing eggs splattered over your desk). So I'm just so.. what's the word I'm looking for? Ah. FRUSTRATED.

I'm so sorry.

OMG, that is TRAGIC!! :hit :hugs Cat?

It sure is.
Nope, not the cat (surprisingly.. Max knocks EVERYTHING over), my little 9 y/o sister walked into my room when she KNOWS she's not to disturb me when I'm sleeping, but she came in, brought Annabelle with her (my giant Newfoundland dog), and 'Anna' stepped on the cord hooking the bator to the outlet. So it wasn't completely my sister's fault, but if she hadn't come into my room at 6AM, it wouldn't have happened. :he

Hi brian! I was just thinking about you! I need to finally make a rooster decision on my serama, I have had two straight roos fight, so that let me with a straight serama roo and two young frizzle brothers hatched from my frizzled hens. suggestions on the frizzle gene and who to keep or not to! Most people ask me for frizzle and Harmony likes them as well, so I would like to get the best chance for frizzle via eggs as possible without getting frazeled chickens! How are you and the wife? I hope things are going well for you! How are those birds you had gotten back after some time? Are they doing better and laying?
the golden sebrite parents are doing fine, the little pullet managed to climb into my blue heeler's kennel, so im down to the parents again

i dont know if i mentioned it here, but we are in the process of moving our farm about 30 miles south. thats why i haven't been on much. im starting to wish that i collected thread instead of chickens, it would be alot easier to move!

on breeding the frizzles:
im still learning, and if im wrong i hope someone corrects me.

think of it this way - there are full frizzle, half frizzle, and frizzle carriers. frazzle is an "overdose" of the frizzle gene

full frizzle + full frizzle = frazzle
full frizzle + half frizzle = 1/4 frizzle and 3/4 frazzle
full frizzle + carrier = 1/2 full frizzle and 1/2 half frizzle there will probably be a few oddball carriers.
half frizzle + carrier = 1/4 full frizzle, 1/2 half frizzle, and 1/4 carrier.
carrier + carrier = carrier, occasionally a half frizzle will show.

a full frizzle will be as curly as you can get before frazzle, both parents bred from very curly birds.
a half frizzle will be curly, but not as much. typically bred from one full frizzle parent and one smooth parent from a frizzle breeding.
a carrier is simply a smooth bird from a frizzled breeding.

there is one set of genetic combinations i didnt factor in above, but for the most part its an accurate simplified breeding method. (parental makup Ff and FF, to parental makup FF and Ff.)

I have a white LF cochin hen that has frizzled body feathers, but straight head and neck feathers. Would she be considered half-frizzled? It doesn't really matter because I don't plan on breeding her, but I'm curious.

I've never seen the frizzle gene explained like that before. I've always been told Frizzle to Frizzle = Frazzle, Frizzle to Smooth = 1/2 Frizzle and 1/2 Smooth, and Smooth to Smooth = Smooth. I didn't realize that there could be half frizzles and frizzle carriers. Very interesting.

yes, the cochin you described is probably a half frizzle.

they way i described it isnt entirely accurate, but it is the easiest way i can think of to explain it.

the best frizzles would carry the genes FF + Ff, and Ff +FF from the parents, but this breeding gives more frazzles than frizzles. frazzles are FF + FF but some recessive genes would show through to make the FF+Ff frizzles.

if i were breeding them to sell to a show breeder, i would breed my best frizzle to my best smooth from a frizzle breeding, and offer a couple carrier bred chicks, to aid in breeding. i would intentionally try to keep my parent stock as FF+ff for the breeder quality line. on request i would do FF+Ff to FF+ff, but only to someone who is experienced with frizzles and frazzles.

i somehow missed above:
half frizzle+ half frizzle = 1/4 carrier, 1/2 half frizzle, and 1/4 full frizzle. as a buyer i would be happy with this line. keep in mind the grandparents throw loops into the breeding, so there will be some oddball frazzles potentially from this breeding.

please keep in mind, im just starting with frizzles myself and am trying to learn this. this is not from proven breeding experience.

edited to add:
when i refer to a frizzle carrier or smooth chicken, i am referring to a Ff+ff parentage. the chicken will appear smooth at first glance, but will have some minor curving in the feathers. from these breedings you will yield some perfectly smooth birds (ff+ff). these should not be used in frizzle breeding.

and..... she cant upload a vid or pics
Sally and all, if you're having tech problems, have a look here and if none of those tips work, start a thread in the Feedback and Announcement section, give as much info as possible, screenshots would be great too, (if you can take and upload them).

LOL! I don't know what is going on with BYC right now...

So good news, no new deaths from the chicken "plague". AND 13 of 18 Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucana shipped eggs from Lark Rise hatched. Previously my best hatch with shipped eggs was 3 out of 20

SO VERY happy with that! And that includes 2 chicks I rescued who were malpositioned with beak in belly unable to pip. DH suggested I need to do a video of how I do that as I haven't seen that anywhere else.

Bad news: One of my month old babies ran out through the run fence and apparently got trapped in this flash flood storm we are having. I went out to check on everyone and found it upside down next to the fence on the outside, soaked, freezing, and trying to die on me. I stuffed it in my bra and ran it inside. I set it up in the extra bator set to 103 (their normal body temp right?) and rubbed vet rx on its feet and beak, gave b12 and vit e just in case it will help and keep poking a hand in to stimulate it to keep from fading. Don't know if it will work but its all I can come up with.... ? Ideas?
That is great news! Wonderful hatch too! I'm really glad things are starting to look up for you again. Sheesh, you only had enough sadness lately. You should take a video of your assist next time! Maybe Sally can embed it in her assisted hatch article then? Showing people how to do things and what to look for is only 1000x simpler than trying to explain and guessing from their descriptions what they are dealing with!

By this time I'm hoping your chick recovered fully? I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I've literally brought chicks back from the dead simply by warming them up under a headlamp, but it depends when you find them and how bad they are. Loveourbirds gave some good tips to keep in mind for future incidents.

What horribly bad luck!

LMAO!!! after reading hours and hours I said heck with it and took settings back as original and signed in and out and this time it worked!!! OMG how frustrating and for how long! lololololol

Harmony's Anchor hatched babies all by herself!!! I didn't know when she was due, but I went in yesterday or was it day before? lol and she started clucking away when I opened the door, so I went to see here and low and behold she was telling me to look what she did! there was still eggs in there so I didn't mess with her but isn't she just adorable! MIND YOU THAT box she is in is the same for BLACK Betty cochin, remember how black betty filled the entire box with herself, look at this cute TINY girl WHO SHOWED THAT BIG FAT MOMMA UP! he he he

I ACTUALLY have a good momma hen!!! go figure, think she can sit on a doz brahma? he he he

oh excuse the red heat lamp, it was freezing in that big old shed and I always worry about tiny serama

question should I add marbles to the big chicken waterer so they don't drown or will mom save them?

uggggg but now I cant add a video!!! gosh boogers!!
