Oh my god, thank you for reminding me. I forgot to take mine today! Be right back.
Just finished a hatch of bresse from Chiqita. She sent me 12 and 9 went into lockdown. All 9 hatched (one of them popped out two days early in perfect shape!). One of them is still in the hatcher, it pipped through a large blood vessel and I think it aspirated some blood. It was doing okay but then it was struggling to get out and it broke an umbilical blood vessel, its still alive, but the paper towel around it is soaked with blood. I don't think its going to make it, but 8 out of 12 from shipped eggs is not too shabby. I also had my first MW turkey egg hatch from my own eggs. I was so proud, I did a little turkey dance.
Its been a crazy chicken day for me. Besides the awesome bresse hatch, I had a friend drop off two random, light brahma cockerels for me (I have a weakness for brahmas) Not sure what I'm going to do with them, they're a bit small, but they're sweet. I think one of them is partially blind, but he still managed to empty the feeder, so I guess he'll be allright. I'm such a sucker for "If you don't take them, I have someone else who wants them for meat".
Then I noticed that one of my little six week old babies in my outside brooder managed to scalp herself, I have no idea how, but I could draw you a picture of the cranial bone suture lines in a chicken skull from the back of her head right now. I cleaned her up and slathered her with some triple antibiotic and bandaged her head and neck with some gauze and vetrap (neon pink). I think I'll name her bonnet. I put her back in with her siblings and she's eating and drinking, seemingly oblivious to the fact that her skull is exposed.
Then I saw one of her siblings (six weeks old mind you) kill and mutilate a mouse that attempted to eat from their feeder. It was fascinating and disturbing at the same time. It makes me wonder what really happened to his sister's skull..........
