i like the basque, they lay well and are bigger than i thought - they should make pretty fair meatbirds. i know the bresse is supposed to be the best tasting chicken, havent eaten one LOL.

i agree with you, when greenfire gets in a new breed- everyone seems to jump on the bandwagon. they think they will make tons of money off of them because of the cost. fact is by the time the chicks get old enough to lay, greenfire has sold thousands of them.

i like the autosexing breeds, and i will probably order some of the ayam cermani's off of that link i sent to you. but, i make the best money off of my regular old rocks and wyandottes.

i have found the basque arent as durable as most of our heritage breeds. not as weak as silkies but not as good as a RIR, rock, or wyandotte. i dont know if it was because they were imported or not.

The Ayam Cremani is a really interesting bird. I gor some Peahen eggs off a BYCer once to take over. None of them hatched but he gave me a few "bonus eggs" and a few of them hatched. One is a project bantam ayam cremani/naked neck. Its quite a trip. I may let it in with the Banty Cochins and see what happens.

Auto sexing is great if you are selling eggs or eating roosters and selling pullet chicks.

i have learned to vent sex, but im slow at it - my eyes just arent what they used to be. the color sexing will make my life much easier. it pays to have some novelty breeds, they draw the attention to your flock.

my plans for next year are to breed:
large fowl
basque, salmon faverolles, white crested blue polish, russian orloffs, turkens, dark and white laced red cornish, black australorps, white rocks, black giants, barred rocks, rhode island reds, new hampshire reds, partridge rocks, dominiques, silver laced wyandottes, lemon cuckoo and buff orpingtons,light brahmas, cream legbars, rhodebars, and black araucanas.
project large fowl: cambar, welbar, crele rock, i may start another group of rhodebars since i will have show quality birds in both breeds. im also thinking of using dominique and selecting for rose combs on my new autosexing crosses.

bantams:
calico cochin, blue calico cochin, lemon cuckoo cochin, blue cochin, blue mottled cochin, blue splash cochin, buff cochin, black cochin, and any other cochins i can obtain between now and spring. partridge wyandotte, and silver sebrites.

that will put me in the neighborhood of 40 breeds, down from the 59 i had this year.

I have a few Andalusians and have some more eggs coming from Dick Horstman for next weeks run. I am going to try crossing them with a white sport cream legbars roo.

I also have some Breda that hatched. I seem to have good luck with blues. I have BBS orps and Jersies and lav orps as well.

At this stage it's just been fun to try and get anything to hatch after a long journey but I need to get down to business.

ive not had any luck with hatching bredas, i had 2 eggs out of 6 labeled breda hatch, and they were clean legged. my trading buddy Bob has some, they are beautiful - i will end up with some eggs from him.

I just got a message from a lady in NJ from the FB site I just posted on, she wants serama chicks and willd rive since I am close enough to the interstate that runs to NJ. So that was pretty quick with one five minute post lol. She didnt ask a price and I didnt even think of one yet! HA HA HA!
