I am so sorry that some of you had such horrible experiences with ILT. I guess I had it easier because I isolated to an air-conditioned space as soon as they started looking sick. As an asthmatic, I can tell you that the A.C can make a huge difference in your ability to breathe and utilize oxygen. I even had blood-coughers recover for me. I used a lot of rubber gloves and tyvek suits and booties. I also realized that when the conjunctivitis caused their eyes to stick shut and swell with puss, it was best to open them and wipe around the eye with a light coating of sterile white petrolatum. not too heavy or the petrolatum (vaseline) will cause the eye to get goopy and back up the drainage into the trachea causing more lung congestion, but if you can keep those eyelids emoliated and open to a degree, you can allow the eye to drain and keep that much more fluid from backing up into their already over-burdened lungs.

Needless to say, I went through about a gallon of bleach a day, I bought extra rubbermaid tubs and lined them with rags (instead of shavings in order to cut down on the dust) and therefore the stress on the lungs. That way, I could move them to a clean tub in the morning with a clean rag and then bleach their old tub and let the bleach sit before I wiped it out in order to have clean, sterile tubs for the morning. I spent about 8 hours a day in the isolation rooms but I came through with almost my entire flock intact and it was worth it to me, plus I was totally in my element.

Also, if you suspect ILT, call your state vet, they are there to help. They may put you on quarantine, but they will not cull your flock. In fact, the only thing that they will forceably cull your flock for is AI. I asked my NPIP worker what happens if one of my birds comes up positive for AI and he said that they would probably send out the national guard to surround my property unil every carcass is disposed of. I had this picture of me, hold up in my coop with a shotgun and the national guard outside waiting to take me down.

You can get ILT vaccine through a vet. You need to be licensed in order to purchase it, but that is as simple as contacting your state vet and filling out a form. If you call your merck rep, he or she can direct you to a vet who can dispense the vaccine for you.

I recommend that we all contact merck and request that they make the innovax ILT available to small, backyard flock owners. It is sold right now as an in ovo vaccine, but studies show that it is just as effacacious if given in the wing web at around 5 weeks of age.

update- my eggs are on day 19, all have the swoop when candled- I started a lockdown- I had one with clear on the point and it is the first to be in air cell.

Candled all my eggs this time and found 2 buff eggs are growing. Woohoo! That means the old rooster is not infertile just cold and missing his mark.

So went to get the last of my eggs last night after taking my girl to gymnastics and discovered a hen sitting in the same spot with eggs under her. Belly area plucked bare. Apparently she thinks this is fine weather for raising chicks. 10 degrees is not ideal chick weather and she was put on the roost. Hope the cool down last night helped her. If not I guess I will move her to the garage with a heat lamp. I am always willing to let a broody do the hard work.
YAY!!!! I think they all miss their mark ha ha ha!!

plucked her belly???? none of mine ever did that is it norm?

sounds like you can lead the revolution Ren!

You should gather all your info and your experiences start a thread, and explain IN DETAIL the disease and its vacinations and such... THEN INCLUDE a pre writting file that can be printed signed or emailed to whomever your suggesting! take the hard work out and people will do it....

You have a wealth of info in that brain of yours woman, use it to help others on this disease... you already know what our health inspector told me.... its the worst one he has seen yet and spread so much easier than most....

I am with ya on this!!!

on another note, one of my coolerbator fans is having some issues, need to order some ebay back ups.... it stops running and then will run slow if I give it a push..... NOT good in a coolerbator need that air!!!
