If what I've read is correct Fresh Water Diatomaceous Earth is the same as Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. What I'm not sure of is whether young ducklings can be exposed to it. I'd appreciate any input since I don't want to expose them to it until I can determine if it's safe for still growing ducklings.

if it is food grade it should say it or say you can use it for animals or humans not all is food grade we use red lake earth from tsc http://www.tractorsupply.com/red-la...s-earth-with-calcium-bentonite-20-lb--1019864

Fresh water is the same as food grade. No need to give it to ducklings that are still in a brooder and it isn't good to give in an enclosed environment. It can cause respiratory problems. If your ducklings are outside now, then they should be just fine with it as long as they are in an open area.

I layed some DE in the nest before the ducks hatched,,they are in an outside enclosure,so no trouble there..just to keep the flies, smell and parasites down.

They were outside yesterday when the wind shifted which made me panic and bring them back into the house until I could get some more information. I was concerned mostly with respiratory problems so it's good to know it's okay for them in the great outdoors. Because of Squeak and Pip I want to avoid pesticides that are just as bad for humans and animals as they are for what they are supposed to kill.
