Diatomaceous earth used in the coop does it work?

I heard from some that de is good to use in parts of the coop such as nesting boxes and perches for parasites like mites and pests such as flies is it true? Or is this stuff I’m hearing a whole bunch of baloney? I understand that de is also bad to breathe so I worry if I use it in the coops nesting boxes that when they scratch around in the boxes it’ll make dust and they’ll breathe it in I’m just curious if what I’m hearing about using de is true or not since I might consider putting some in my coop to hopefully control those annoying pests that pop up occasionally

Sounded like it was honestly but then again I heard for some it worked and some not it seems to be a pretty big 50/50 on whether it’s good or bad

I don't use it in the coop or nest boxes, but I do mix some in with the sand I use in their dust-bath area.
