I bought a used Dickey incubator. I am having trouble figuring out the best place to get a temp reading from. I am using a spot check digital thermometer. If I put the probe up top , I can get it to stay a constant 99.5. When it is 99.5 at the top it is reading 98.1 at the bottom. If I try to get it to 99.5 at the bottom the temp at the top gets to 101 and the back up wafer thermostat kicks the heat off. (It has an electronic thermostat with wafer back up). I have ran 3 hatches in it so far (2 non shipped eggs and 1 shipped eggs) and they have been horrible.I had much better hatches in my styro bator. The eggs are developing, just not hatching. I have been going by the temp reading at the top. I just decided to check the temp at the bottom tonight and found this variance. So where do you place your thermometer to get a good average reading? Thanks for your help.

Put it right where you see mine in the photo:

That keeps it right at the height of the eggs in their incubation phase.

The eggs that go into the hatching trays below need to be slightly cooler by about a half a degree or so which they will be if you are measuring the temperature halfway up.

Thank you for the response and the picture. This helps alot. I will give it a try with the thermometer there. I ordered one like you have in your pic today from Mr. Dickey. My incubator had the bracket for it just didn't have the thermometer on it. Thanks again.
