So I have 3 ducklings that are just wonderful. The mom is very protective and still sitting on a few eggs. I noticed that yesterday morning one egg was broken and goo was over the other ones and of course flies. I checked the eggs and they were all cold so I got them out of there and scooted mom out and then put the babies (2wks) in my garden within sight of mom. I raked out the kennel and let it air out and the babies had water in the garden but mom was panicking and was getting them all upset. I figured I'd leave them alone and went inside for about 15 minutes. Came outside and mom was out and on the other side of the garden fence!
The drama REALLY began when I was trying to get her in with peas and then all of a sudden the BABIES were out through a hole that I found later that rabbits chewed! The babies could get into the duck area through the fence but mom couldn't and the boys were pecking at the babies every time they came in! So now I'm in the middle of FRANTIC ducks and babies with mom on the outside! Finally I was able to snatch the little ones up and put them in the kennel but mom was still on the outside going nuts. My husband came out and we took one end of the fence apart by the kennel and I held the door open so he could corral her toward it. Finally all is back to normal...minus eggs!
It seemed like FOREVER but I'm sure it wasn't that long.
All I can say is that I had good intentions and if you had a camera...you could have won big money on Americas Funniest Videos!
Long story, but it goes good with a cup of coffee.
