Did I buy an old hen? She has a large spur.

Recently acquired a flock of RIR hens that we were told were all a year or "just a bit over". Take a look at this big fluffy girl on the left and her spur. We haven't inspected her vent to see what that looks like, but just from experience (and we have none) would you pick her out of a lineup as an old bird?

She looks young to me. Her legs look very smooth and clean*. Other hens will have more rough looking legs. I don't think the spurs have anything to do with her age.

Oh and Welcome to Backyard Chickens! hope you'll find this site very helpful and if you have a question no matter how silly it sounds ask away!

Thank you! That helps a lot. We've already discovered we had one very young rooster in this bunch, so now I'm skeptical of what we were sold. We just wanted to start with healthy young layers. I love this site and will have lots of questions as we learn what we are doing! :)

No problem! I'd contact whoever sold you those hens and ask for a replacement of a refund for the cockerel.
