My 4 girls are close to laying, I'd say in next 4 weeks. I went to my local feed store and being a first time chicken owner asked for a organic feed for my pulleys that are close to laying. I brought home the bag and instead of crumble it's pellets( they might be ready for pellet, I have no idea) they seem very disinterested and are foraging for most of their food, we are on 30 acres and they have free roam of 5 or so of those. What has me worried is that their faces have gotten SO red, almost purple! Even their beaks! I attached a picture but it's not very close. I noticed the label says for layers after 40 weeks of age, mine are not even close to that! More like coming up on 20 weeks. Should I put a hold on this food and go buy another bag of younger layer food? I've heard pullets get redder the closer they come to laying but this is a crazy purple:0
Thanks for ANY input
