I received my baby chicks in the mail today from mpc. They are all doing great but one has pasty butt AND this one is also a little darker than the others. I've been trying to clean his/her bottom all day and my husband finally made some progress this evening and we're pretty sure there's a bit of an appendage down there (which might also be why "he" is more prone to pasty butt?). I just found out that I'm not really supposed to have chickens in my town and I really don't think I can get away with a rooster in suburban NJ.

Sooo, what does a baby male chick look like? These chicks are salmon faverolles. Do roosters have male parts? New to all this! Appreciate any help!

this thread will answer any questions you may have about rooster parts... and probably some you never would have asked

sometimes with pasty but they just get irritated and swell up down there. try putting a little olive oil or vaseline on it to keep further poo from sticking.

Good luck

oh, by the way, on many breeds you can't tell a roo from a hen until they start crowing or laying. Some can be sexed by the color of their feathers, others, the roos till start developing very red little combs quite early. I don't know enough about your breed to give you the signs of a roo, but "parts" aren't one of them.
