Did my chicken lay a different colored egg today?

Hey there,

I have two egg layers. On is a cream-colored bantam who lays whitish eggs, and one is a black colored hen who lays pinkish eggs (I don't know her breed). I check their nest religiously, every day after work and then a few more times before nightfall (I am just so in love with them!), and on days off, I check like a hundred times a day.

Anyhoo, yesterday I found two whitish eggs, same size, in the nest, and no pinkish egg. Didi my bantam lay two, or did my black hen lay a white egg for once?
What gives?

Generally speaking, a hen will lay the same color eggs her entire life. There is some variation, of course. For instance, a hen that lays a medium brown egg one day may lay a slightly lighter or darker brown egg the next day. And many breeds' eggs tend to darken as the hen ages. But a hen that lays a brown egg one day will never lay a blue egg the next day. So it's possible that if your pink-egg-laying hen's eggs are fairly pale normally and then she laid an egg that is more pale then usual, it might look like the other hen's white egg. But it's also not unheard of for a single hen to lay two eggs in the same day. It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen!
