Buyer beware~Chicken fever has it's cost... yadayadayadayada. All that aside,my experience with the breeder that I got these chicks from was.... hmmmm interesting. Without going into it all, my concern is did I get what I paid for? The following pics are 6 chicks that I need help with on confirming their breeds. I know what I was supposed to get, but not sure. Any input on sex would be great. I am pretty sure that one is a roo, although she assured me that they were all pullets. *sigh*

Chick #1 looking female with that tail, also has feathered legs

Chick #1

Chick #1 about 2+wks old

Chick #2 1+wks old, not much of a tail

Chick #2

Chick #3 my guess is roo~ BOO! he does have personality as you can see. 2+wks old

Chick #3

Chick #3

Chick #4 nice spot on head and a little bit of a tail 1+wks old

Chick #4

Chick #5 I want this one to be a pullet sooooo bad, but the lack of tail has me sad. 2+wks

Chick #5

Chick #5

Chick #5

Chick #6 so pretty and such a mouth. I do have a tuft of a tail though. 2+wks old

Chick #6

Chick #6

Thanks for any and all help. My chick buying is done for this season....I think <3

Possible breeds were, Blue or Black Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Dominiques (although they weren't what I wanted, they were in the bin she was pulling from), Blue Laced Orpingtons, Blue Orpingtons. I did also get an EE, I know what that one was, I pulled it and I think it's a pullet~ yay!

I don't know that I'd use the lack of tail as a gender determination...they are still too young for knowing gender by looking at them. Some breeds you can tell as early as 3 weeks, but not often.

I personally have a suspect roo in the midst of my 6 week old hatchery sexed pullets (supposed to be 95% accuracy so even the "pros" get it wrong).

Far too young to determine gender. Chick #1 possible marans with the feathered legs. Chick #2 cuckoo marans. Chick #3 Dominique. Chicks #4-6 could be blue/black orps. The two-tone toes/feet make me wonder about those.

2,3, and 4 look like my barred rock chicks. But I'm only just starting to get into chickens... So don't take my word for it.

When they were pulled for me, these are the breeds that I was told my chicks were.
Chick #1 is supposed to be a French Blue Marans (but could be black)
Chick #2 is supposed to be a Cuckoo Marans
Chick #3 is supposed to be a Cuckoo Marans but I lean towards Dominique because the beak form is just different. Also the age she said the Cuckoos were doesn't match with that chicks age/size.
Chick #4 is supposed to be a Cuckoo Marans
Chick #5 is supposed to be a Blue Orpington. The gray feet/legs are odd. My Buff Orps have white-pinky legs.
Chick #6 is supposed to be a Blue Laced Orpington.

Let me say that the breeders set-up was wonderful. It was clean and the chicks were very well cared for. She was very nice. The woman was just so distracted. She kept picking up chicks, checking their feathers (even though I was pretty sure feather sexing was out since they were all past 3 days old) and handing me more chicks. In the end she ended up quoting me the wrong price (less than what they should have been). When I told her it was ok, just tell me the total, she didn't seem comforatable doing that. Eventually I just handed them more $$$ than she quoted but less than they were supposed to be- then she insisted I take more chicks free. All very odd, so who knows what I have lol

I was going to say, the feet of 4 - 6 look like my little Lavender Ameraucanas legs.
I read on the Ameraucanas thread, most AM colors have the slate legs all the way along but the dilutes in the lav color cause the feet to be off colored until the chick is older and they become their proper slate color.
I dont know nearly enough about breeds of chicks to say... but if they are blue, that is a single dilute, right... so the legs should only be diluted if the color is dark to begin with.. hard to dilute pink....?

Anyway, I was picturing your scenario with that lady in my head as I read it..... first thing that came to mind was, could she have just been a substitute chick seller stand-in? That would explain the feather checking and the money issue.

Breeder - "Honey, it's easy as pie, the dark ones are the Marans, and the ones with the spots are the...."

Substitute - "What did he say the feathers of those marans looked like again?"

She was deffinately the breeder/seller. Don't think they are Amerucanas. she didn't have any. She did have Orps, Lemon Cuckoo, Buff, lavender, blue and blue laced- Marans- Black & Blue Copper and just a few Cuckoo,, Dominiques, EEs (but they were all chipmunk), Buckeyes, and LOTs of silkies. Nice woman, just seemed to be scattered. I did try to tell her that barred chicks, like Cuckoos, Barred Rocks etc. had sexing hints in the spots on their heads. Tight clear spot = female, blurry spot = male. Not definitive but a clue. she didn't listen and kept passing blurry spot chicks to me. lol
