Hey guys, this is the end of day 23 I was starting to worry about my 2 unpipped eggs because something smells in the 'bator...so I quickly candled them in the steamy bathroom while I removed some hatchlings. The eggs didn't smell, thankfully, guess it's just the hatch gunk that needs cleaning out. One I couldn't see a thing at all, so I'll give it another day, but I determined that one of the unpipped eggs looked the same now as it did at lockdown too much empty space in it --- so I took it outside and carefully opened it up.

The chick is well formed and correctly positioned. I assumed he was alive at lockdown when I candled (though it's hard to tell with the dark green egg) but I wanted to get opinions. There was actually less blood than I expected.
What day you think he quit on?

Theres a lot of yoke there..so im thinking maybe 18 or so, but im not sure, because they draw it all in and everything. But still upper-teens. But i dont think you need to worry much about it. If you have an over all good hatch rate, one or two strange things like this isnt too devastating. Still sucks though. Im sorry not all of them made it.

How are the others?

It's ok, I did get a good hatch!!! I set 23, and 20 made it to lockdown, and 17 have hatched with 1 more pip that appears perfectly healthy I expect it to hatch, so that's pretty darn good for a first incubation with old eggs in a cheapie still air LG!!

I wanted to open it up and learn as much as I can. I would have wondered about it for the rest of my life if I had just tossed it in the trash!!! I was a bit scared of touching it (gross to me), but just seeing it doesn't bother me coz I already knew it was dead.

I too always open up the non-hatched eggs.. If I didnt I will always wonder.. Did some thing go wrong with the hatch.. How far did it go before it died.. Did it even make it half way through incubator. Or was it just a clear egg that wasnt fertilized.. I would rather learn than throw them out.. That way if you know who the egg is coming from.. And they alway have clear ones. Then you know some thing is going on with them.. Like not being fertalized.. I only have button quail and I keep them in pairs only.. I mark what eggs come from what pair.. If I get lots of clear ones from one pair. I find different mates for them and see if one is now having reproductive problems..
