Why you got chickens in the first place?

1 yr ago today, my husband bought me a book for my b-day. The Chickens for Dummies book, that was his ok for me to get the chicks i had been talking about for the last year lol... So it is a full year later and i sit here thinking. I wanted them for the eggs, so i got 12 Amberlinks. Then 4 months later i got the Bantam bug and got 4. That ended up with my LF being rehomed and now i have 22 Bantams of various breeds.. But not many eggs......I sure do like my bantams but i am thinking something is wrong with this picture as i stand at the grocery store buying eggs!!!!!

that is so funny. and true.... how true...

My DH told me that as long as my girls sold eggs enough to pay for their food, I was good to go. ok, fine i have my eggs sold as quick as they can lay them now. Even got the 'ok' to get more chix. (duh, already did) they are totally paying for thier own food, bedding, some treats etc.

I came home from the grocery store last night and was making a cake, my hubby came in and saw the store bought eggs. he gave me this look like "WHAT THE (*^@??????). i just smiled and told him the girls were paying for some extra goodies this weekend at the farmers market, and didnt have any eggs left for me!!!!!

he just kinda shook his head and wandered away........

I have a bunch of bantams and ornamentals too... I'm putting them all in the incubator, when I'm at the grocery store I realize I need eggs to cook with and I stand there and look at them - but then I say, why the heck would I buy eggs when I have chickens!

Then I go home and have no eggs because when I look at an egg I think... I could eat this... or... It could be a baby!

quite the conundrum.

Now that I am hatching I am having the hardest time cooking my eggs. I know I don't need anymore chicks but every time I crack one open I think of the little fuzzy that could of been.

I got mine for healthier eggs n meat. They brought the comic relief.
I have a bad habit of treating all of them like pets which makes it hard to dress the boys for dinner. However, they taste sooo good once they make it to dinner.
I just tell each chick to be a girl so they can be kept for eggs but some just don't listen.

ijust can't do it. i can eat them. that was part of the reason i got them too. I got ducklings this year to raise for meat too. um, now that they have cuddled with me, no what THAT is going to happen either. I have no problem during deer season with a deer, duck season with duck, but for some reason, i just cant do them after i have raised or named them. Oh well, guess I will just have a lot of happy luvin ducks and chicks around. At least they are holding their own by selling their eggs.
