Didn't get what I paid for. What to do?

Well Sorry its happened BUT a "Purple Ribbon" Redbone would run you $800-1100 Soooo I think you were sold a story and different bloodlines.
Live and learn.
If your truly buying a papered dog for specific purposes you should have a contract.

I would have to agree with alot of the people, you did get what you paid for, however you didn't get what you were pomised, two different things. Did the breeder show you the papers for the parents when you picked out the puppy? I always have my dogs pedigrees out to be viewed, and extra copies for new owners to take home with them. But I also have the papers at the time of puppy purchase too. You never know, this dog could end up being a great dog.

You couldn't get an elderly mutt at a dogpound for much less than two hundred dollars. If you have a puppy, that appears to be purebred, and your fiance likes it, then just be happy. Two hundred dollars is less than any rescue would charge you for a dog that could be much older than the puppy. Any puppy is well worth that. Just chalk it up to experience, and be glad you have a puppy.
You can send in for papers from several registries just by sending in a vet statement saying the dog is a coon hound. If you just want papers, order them yourself for less than fifty dollars.

My husband wanted me to pay $700 for a black lab with papers because the mom won a 2nd place dog show?! I think the kid was BSing you about the papers honestly...

You can file civil suit for $60 and demand the papers in court or 1/2 your money back for the dog so you can keep the dog. Just throw in the $60 for court costs. I took someone to court over $500 and made them pay the legal fees for me to bring them to court too! The judge pretty much told her 'PAY UP' you have until midnight tonight.

And all was right with the world that week!

Actually, a "Purple Ribbon Bred" dog might be one that has three or more generations of ancestors registered with the United Kennel Club in Kalamazoo, MI. If you have this person's name and a date of birth for the dog, as well as an accurate breed name, then you might be able to find out if your dog has even been litter registered with the UKC. The phone number there is 269-343-9020. You can also register for free on the UKC forums and post your question to the Registration board. Good luck!

There are no more bad people in the dog fancy than there are in any other facet of society. I have owned dogs all of my life and have been active in the dog show world for almost nine years. I have had a few bad experiences in those nine years, but no more than I have had in the "real" world during that time.

If it is AKC you can call them yourself to see if the papers are actually in the works.
I would take him to small claims court. But then that would depend on whether your fiance likes him. He may not want to give him up.
You could just put the word out to others possibly wanting a dog. Give him a bad name.

Do you love the dog? Why do the papers matter unless you are going to either: a) put them in a frame on the wall to admire or b) show/breed the dog. If your desire is choice b, then no matter what, you've got some learning to do regarding pedigrees, structure, genetics, inherited diseases, heath screenings, etc.
I showed dogs for years and right now I have two of my last show dogs with pedigrees back generation after generation. One had a litter brother that was ranked one of the top terriers in the AKC time and time again. I also have the Boston I found wandering the streets. Papers or no, I love them all the same.
Spend enough time showing dogs and somebody is going to sue someone else over something. Most of the time it's throwing good money after bad. I had a friend who sued a breeder for switching dogs and not giving hers back when the breeder took the youngsters to get their ears cropped. My friend had DNA from puppy teeth, etc, etc, and on and on. She spent 13K to get the dog back. 13K, people! That's a lot of dog flesh that can be bought for that kind of money. The dog came from good stock, but the genetics were not irreplaceable by any means.
So, what is your goal? Make them give you what you paid for? You paid for a dog. You feel that you paid for papers? Papers can be forged on a computer, which is what they might do. The litter was probably never registered with the UKC. If it was, then the UKC might have a mechanism for this, but so much depends on the breeder. The AKC would probably tell you to spay/neuter the dog and get and ILP so that you can compete in events other than conformation.
If it's a "principle of the thing" deal, well, in my opinion life is too short to waste time on "papers". But, as usual, you get what you pay for and this opinion is free.

BTW, I just wanted to add that I don't think that dog show folks are any more disreputable than any other group of folks. People act in completely predictable ways. Some folks play nice and some folks don't. Why do you think we just put in a feedback section on BYC? 'Cuz people act like people.
