Didn't think of this...no access to grit!

I have WHAT in my yard? :

OK So what about the grit? I can't get commercial grit in this area, my birds usually free range too and they've been stuck indoors for three days! Not a one of them will come out.

I took 6 eggs, shells and all and beat them good and scrambled them. I fed the whole thing to the girls and they loved it. Will that serve as grit and a return of calcium?

Grit and calcium are two different things. The grit is their "teeth" -- also called Gastroliths. The gizzard holds rocks and uses them to grind hard food like seeds. Oyster shell and eggshells are dissolved in the digestion but the rocks stay in the gizzard until they're too small and then they pass through and need to be replaced.

You will be surprised at the size of commercial grit. It's about the size of pea gravel. In Colorado the roads are chip-sealed with crushed granite that looks like the same product I buy in 5# bags. My hens get a certain amount of their grit from the crushed rock parking spot next to the garage.
