Diet advertising on egg packs...what does it mean?

and it's still not completely true. cows can be fed chicken bedding, including the poop. the problem is that they can then feed the cow manure back to the chickens. the risk is nowhere as great as direct feeding, but there is still a risk of contamination.

I think most consumers are fully aware of the fact that chickens eat bugs and such.

i think that if they actually stopped to think about it, they would conclude that it was a possibility, but i don't think that happens. i can't begin to count the number of people who have been COMPLETELY shocked when i've taken meat leftovers (organic, pasture raised) out to the chicken yard. the girls really love sausage and eggs! people freak out!

I think you missed the entire point here. The effort with respect to the label is to assure consumers that the product they are eating is not fed Rendered animal proteins. Whether right or wrong in terms of chickens it is a response to a comsumer perception.

I agree that some would be surprised that chickens eat meat scraps, I dont think it comes as a shock to anyone that chickens eat bugs and worms.

Kind of a different thing

My effort in the earlier post was to inform that the vegetable fed label as ironic as it may seem is based on some rational and consumer driven need.

Thats all

I have fed my chickens "vegetarian" layer rations and other feeds for many years. They live mainly on that diet. They are allowed to supplement thier rations with free ranging a few days a week. My birds are also fed kitchen scraps, but only fruit and vegetable except fo breads, which may contain some animal products. I have not encountered ANY health problems from feeding vegetarian feed. In fact, my flock seems realtively unaffected by many of the scourges that seem common in many flocks. If there were harm from the vegetarian only feed just about everyone in my part of the county would have some sick birds as there are no animal products in most of the layer rations carried in our local feed stores. I'm not sure what the objection to cartons of "vegetarian" fed eggs are on this thread. Is it an objection to creating a perception of vegetarian chickens? Because as a shopper I would buy those eggs so I know the chickens are not eating rendered animal feces, parts, and feathers.

I am still waiting on how you can tell a happy cow from a sad cow, other than just the state they are in... It is amazing at the bull that marketers will try to use on the public(pardon the pun).

i wasn't trying to say you were wrong about the first point. i was just working off your point that it's about perception- so long as chickens aren't eating ground up chickens (or other animals), people perceive it as safe and clean. they are often unaware that "vegetarian fed" doesn't mean that pathogens from other animals might still be present through other feeding methods.
