Difference of Dominique and Barred Rock hens. Need to ID

Unless you are able to find an old family flock that has been kept for eggs and meat and not really concerned with the APA.

Just like Silver-grey dorkings that had been keep on the type of farm I mentioned until all the family had died and the children had no plans of keeping them and they were bought moved to PA. The farms I speak of are few and far between, but there are still some that exist.

well, more than likely the OP's hen is not from a secluded farm with 120+ year old stock...

so basically, Guinea Goonie, if your hen has a rose comb it is a Dominique, and if it has a single comb, it is a Barred Rock.

Either way i'm sure you have a beautiful barred patterned hen! Post a pic! We'd love to see her!

Just to confuse things further: Dominiques aren't barred, they're cuckoo. The two colour patterns aren't the same.

True, but unless you see them side by side, for the novice it can be difficult to tell how the varieties are different, toss in what is probably production /hatchery quality and it gets even murkier.

I describe the differences as barred looks like someone took a marker and a straight edge and drew lines, whereas cuckoo looks more like they were drawn freehand with a crayon.

I got a glimpse of her as she ran out the barn door this morning. She DOES have a single (small) comb and she is built just like the other white rock hens I have. I figured as much, but her pattern is really different for a rock. I will try really hard to get a pic of her, ever since i put her in the barn she is like greased lighting, excited to be running about.

You are confusing 2 completely different breeds.
The "old" Dominique like the one that was used in the breeding of the Plymouth Rock was a Hawk-colored single comb bird and not cuckoo pattern rose comb.
It also states in the American Standard of Perfection under the Plymouth Rock history that the "old" Dominique was not the American or Rose comb Dominique.
Now I have read that Hawk-colored single comb Dominique may have been used in the breeding of the Rose comb Dominique a long with breeds like Asiatic and the Hamburg but they are considered two different breeds...
