Different kinds of nest bedding???

I feel like my hens like the hy or straw better than the pine shavings because they can get all nesty and move pieces of straw around while they lay, ultimately creating a nice butt shaped nest

Mine do that, too. Having a raised lip at the opening of the nest boxes seems to help, but they kick around so much when they make their little butt impressions that some escapes no matter what.

Hi everyone! I have been using straw in my nest boxes and pine shavings on the coop floor. The shaving make clean up super easy, which I like. Heres a question, you mentioned newspaper leaving an ink mark on the eggs, the straw leaves ugly marks on my eggs. Is there any way to get rid of it or is the only way to choose a different nesting material?

Well, since newspaper ink is water-soluble I just rub the eggs with my fingers under warm water and the marks usually come off. No one has commented on the marks yet!
