Hi I’m a newbie 😊 with a question. I searched around the site for other threads but haven’t found what I’m looking for. I have 20 black star chicks @ 2 1/2 weeks old. Today I played some soft music as I was working.. the chicks began to quiet down and started to make a cooing noise that they’ve never made before. It reminded me of warbling noise wild birds make. Anyways is this normal and any info on what the different sounds they make mean? I like to think they like the music but maybe they don’t.. lol
Thanks!

They do make a lot if different sounds, they peep happily whenever they are doing something they like, such as eating. Another thing to note is that I think it depends on breed, my Silkies are the most vocally diverse birds I've ever had.

That's a really interesting observation, @Panhandle chick ! My "babies" live outside now, at nearly 12 weeks old and I can't get music to them to test your hypothesis. They are still at the cheeping stage though. But my older hens have lots of vocalizations. I love it when they "purr," I don't know if anyone else calls it that. That happy little noise they make, talking to themselves while foraging, looking for bugs, kind of mumbling to themselves...deep in their throat, and softly, it kind of goes, Ruuuuck, uuck, uck, uhuhuhuhhhh.... it just makes me smile, to me it is the sound of the contentment of the universe. I hear that rraspy little tune and think, all's well with the world. No matter what the headlines say or what is going on, that sound anchors me and gives me peace. Now if a horse were to chuckle, I would have absolute joy as well, lol! Peace and joy. Yup.
