Different type of layer food

I just used up my first 50 lb bag of layer food. I got it at Agway. I got 16% layer pellets. The girls do not seem to like pellets. They are pretty big in size. While watching them eat, they seemed to go for the smaller pieces and avoided eating the pellets that were not broken.

Is there something else I can ask for? Do they make layer feed that comes in smaller pieces? I would also like something I can add some warm milk or water to and make them a nice warm treat for this winter. Right now I give them oatmeal, but I am affraid I am giving them too much and they don't eat enough of their pellets.

I plan on going to Agway today before the big snow storm hits us. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Great! Thank you. I think I will ask for crumbles and see if the girls like that better than they did the pellets.

Yes you can! As your hens age they may look again for the pellets, you just have to watch them and they'll 'tell' you. That storm is heading to us after it's through with you, we just got home from our last pre-Christmas errand...batten the hatches, this is a messy one. I'm leaving extra food/water for all the animals in the red barn because it's goping to take a while tomorrow after the wind dies down to even get to them...

oh and

Merry Christmas (it's gonna be white)...

I use lay pellets also and my birds did the same thing your birds are doing. That's all I had for them so they had to eat it. About a week later they were eating it just fine. Even my tiny Mille Fleur D'Uccles eat the pellets just fine. I didn't like the layer mash because of the amount of waste, and I've never tried crumbles. Our feed store doesn't carry crumbles.

Not snowing here yet...but the sky looks like it is short to come. Guess I better get my butt in gear and get to Agway before I have to shovel my way out!

Thanks for the advise. Crumbles it will be!

I am hoping Agway has crumbles. If not, I will just stick with the pellets. They don't waste anything now and I would hate to start having them waste their food.

If I cannot get crumbles, can I make a mash out of their pellets?
