Digging Chook!

Can anyone please tell me why my chook would dig a hole big enough to hide herself in? She is a big white, not sure of breed.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Our girls love digging holes, I think it's just their nature. Yesterday we kept them in their shaded run for most the day because it was so blazing hot outside and their run looked like Swiss cheese by the time they got out for some ranging time.

I'm not an expert but my hens dig holes so they can make a dust bowl to clean their feathers and possibly to keep cool.
We have several holes.
