I have heard that cedar is no good for thie birds is this true. I got a bag given to me and just wanted to check before i put it to use....jim

It can be fatal to chickens, the cedar has toxins in it! Don't use it.

It's not only fatal to chickens but to all small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters etc. Due to the oils and the chemical reaction that occurs when the shavings are urinated on, I wouldn't use it for any animals.

Ain't it a shame, because it smells SOOO good! Something in it affects their respiratory system, which is why it's not supposed to be used for small critters like hamsters, guinea pigs, ects. either. In a big, roomy coop with lots of ventilation, IMO it would not kill them, but it could make them sick or affect their health adversely, so I wouldn't risk it myself.

The fumes can burn their respiratory tract. Plus, the oils can cause hair loss in mammals. I would imagine it would irritate poultry skin too. I've seen the effects on guinea pigs I've rescued and it isn't pretty. I was able to save the guinea pigs but they just weren't quite as hardy afterwards. What I find really amazing is that pet stores continue to advertise and sell cedar shavings for small animals. The only thing I would use cedar for is to build a sauna...
