Dirt Floor or raised wood floor in chicken coop???

I have a raised wood floor with vinyl flooring, with wood shavings for bedding. It works great, but I had to make sure every opening was blocked against the rats. My coop also withstood a furious raccoon, who screamed and shook the door. (I slept through this, but my neighbor did not.

My DSO has a dirt floor in his coop. He doesn't have problems with moisture, but the rats do get in, eating feed, and occasionally eggs.

Wire, dirt and wood all have there advantages. I prefer wire in the coop because its easier to keep clean and I really dont have to worry about the weather. If it gets really cold where you are and you have allot of predators I would go with the wood floor. A dirt floor would also be fine but I would put about a ft of the fence underground to keep from things digging in.

Raised off of the ground wood floor for us. It makes for safer chickens (in our case cause we have coons, coyotes, bob cats etc) and it is easier to clean. I like it raised so that I can monitor what happens underneath the coop as well. I also suggest a coop that is big enough to make two rooms out of so you can have a tack room for chicken supplies.

Good Luck
