One of our d'Uccle hens hatched out 3 eggs sometime earlier this week, probably Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. DH put mama and babies in a wire tractor which is inside the chicken run. By Thursday morning one of the chicks completely disappeared. DH has looked and looked everywhere and there is no sign of it anywhere. If it managed to get out of the tractor would our grown chickens kill and eat it?

Yup. It looks like a big yummy, squeaky bug.

I have had to protect more than one escapee chick. Standard-sized birds in particular would have no problem eating a chick.

Have you picked up momma hen and shaken her a little? Sometimes chicks hide up in the fluff of the body, no feet on the ground.

If it got out, it would become a snack. My daughter witnessed our flock finishing off a newly hatched chick. By the time she got me, there was not a trace of it in the run... not a speck of blood.

Sorry.

I didn't know that, I'm glad that I now know that could happen to a baby chick.
