Suddenly, eggs are disappearing......

I have 6 hens that have been consistently laying for several months (2 older hens for more than a year). I purchased two ceramic eggs a long while ago to encourage good egg laying behaviors as one of my hens was laying in the corner of the coop instead of in the nesting box.

So, a couple of months ago I noticed that I was getting fewer eggs than expected and one of the ceramic eggs went missing. I thought perhaps a snake was involved and if it was indeed a snake then it would have some problems digesting the fake egg. Eventually it evened out and I was getting on average 5 eggs a day.

Now, flash forward a few months and this recently occurred: I went on vacation and my neighbors took care of my hens, feeding and watering them and collecting eggs, but not allowing them to free range. They said they got 6 eggs a day (1 per hen). Since returning home, I've let the hens free range during the day and leave the pen door open for access. I've been getting 3-4 eggs per day.

Earlier today, I looked and they were 4 eggs in the box as well as one fake egg. A bit later I checked the box again and there were 5 eggs but NO fake egg. It was gone. Completely gone...not anywhere in the coop or the pen.

So, I've deduced that something is entering the coop while the pen door is open and stealing eggs. What could it be? One of my dogs? Snake? Raccoon? Fox? I'm completely dumbfounded....

About the pen: 6' x 18' X 8' made of hardware cloth and 2 x 4's. The top is covered by chicken wire type cloth and there are no signs or predator disturbance anywhere around the pen.

Are you sure the fake egg isn't in the floor bedding somewhere? Sometimes they kick them out scratching in the nestboxes.

Egg production normally goes up and down throughout the season with hens taking breaks. Stress will cause a halt in production as well.

Ha....detective work.
I had a fake egg stolen, then returned! When my hens were free range, the lowest in the pecking order made a nest in the open garage. So I put a crate in there w a fake wooden egg, and she regularly used it. I left the fake in there and one night it was stolen! I looked everywhere to no avail. A couple weeks later, it was back in the nest, covered in teeth marks!!! The varmint brought it back, no kidding. I posted pics ..I'll look up the link tomorrow and add it to this thread.

Thanks...I thought of those things as well and realize that egg laying fluctuates. I'm going to do a full emptying of the litter from the coop today and replace it with fresh and will see if the ceramic eggs have been buried deeply in the litter. I searched through the litter yesterday (and previously looking for the first missing fake egg) and didn't feel anything. I believe it has been taken by some critter that carried it away (or a snake swallowed it)....it only seems to happen when the hens are out of the pen roaming around and the pen door is open.

Well let us know if you find it!
Well, the mystery has been solved: it was a large black snake and apparently it did eat one of the ceramic eggs and came back for more because I just found it in the coop tonight looking very large and satisfied with itself. It had just eaten 1-3 eggs, but it's timing was bad and it got caught.

P.S. I knew it had eaten one of the ceramic eggs because when I cleaned out the coop last weekend I only found one of the two ceramic eggs and the other was completely gone.

Might not have been the same snake...if they eat a ceramic egg I think it will kill them, not sure at what point the can regurgitate it.
