My chicken appears to be dying right now and I don't know why. She has a clear to brownish, thick discharge oozing out of her beak. Her head is down and she is not moving. Her body is stiffening up. I don't know what to do because I don't know what is wrong. Can I do something to save her? I offered her water, but she won't drink. I don't think she can because viscous fluid is pouring out of her beak quite steadily right now. She was acting lethargic the past few days, but I couldn't see anything wrong with her. I've heard of egg bound hens, so I looked at her vent and didn't see anything unusual. My entire flock has had feather loss around the neck, so I have been treating them with a permethrin powder. Help!

Im sorry to hear that

is she still alive? Does it feel like her crop is swollen and or hard? If there is stuff coming out of the beak it could be impacted crop or maybe a respiratory infection. Sounds like it's bad whatever it is

Sounds like she may have impacted crop,is her crop hard, and has she not been eating? Maybe too late for her,but try holding her upside down while massaging her crop, see if smelly liquid comes out,be careful to hold her head down so she does not choke on this liquid, this might take awhile. If she makes it,you can give her olive oil, soft foods and keep massaging her crop. Unfortunately sometimes the only hope is surgery for impacted crop.

After doing some google searches and reading on chicken diseases, I believe she had an impacted crop, sour crop, and maybe pendulous crop. I wish I had been more educated as I could have saved her. She died and I feel just awful because she clearly suffered. I had noticed several days before that she was very lethargic, standing by the water pail and not moving. She acted like this for days and I looked her over and saw nothing wrong with the way she looked, only her behavior. I have heard of impacted crop, but didn't know much about it and I pictured it looking like a bulge in the neck. I saw no bulge or physical signs. Now I know what to try in the future, but I just feel so awful. She was such a good hen and it's always the best ones that we lose!

I'm so sorry for your loss!

It's always tough to lose one, especially a nice one.

At least you know that in the future if that happens, you can save them!

And compared to the life of 95% of America's chickens, your hen had a wonderful life.

That's true, it does make me feel a little bit better. She got to free range and was indeed loved.
