I have a 3-4 day old Muscovy duckling who is very lively but has a white rings around her nostrils with a bit of yellow. I’ll be going in to get a dish of water for her that’s deep enough for her to dip her head in but was wondering if there’s something wrong? Unfortunately she moves too much for me to get a picture but I can try if need be.

Replying to you both ^^ I gave my duckling a dish deep enough for her head and she clean herself up pretty well, I’ve kept the dish in there cause it’s not big enough for her to drown but if it shows up again I’ll take another picture. She hasn’t shown any other symptoms besides from what I’ve said :)

Debris and gunk can accumulate around the nares of waterfowl so it is very important they have access to clean head deep water to dislodge such debris before accumulating and causing problems.
You did a good deed providing a deep water dish.

Thank you :) and if I may ask another question I was just wondering what I should do concerning my ducklings heat, I have a heat lamp in there that works pretty well but even though it’s spring the temperatures at night are going way down and my little baby is having to sit in temperatures ranging from between 20-25 I’d say. Any good way of keeping heat in? I know she can live with that kind of temperature but it’s still worrying.

You said it's spring there so I'm assuming you mean 20-25 Celsius correct? If you mean Celsius then those are not too cold of temperatures for a brooder to be with a supplemental heat source in fact any hotter and I would be worried about overheating using a heat lamp unless you keep it far enough away from the brooder and are not using a red bulb. The entire brooder should not be heated only a corner where your duckling can go to warm up if needed, but still get out of the heat when hot. Trying to heat the whole brooder will overheat your duckling. Do you have a thermometer that you can place directly under the heat lamp? It's best to always keep a thermometer under your heat lamp when using it in a brooder because you can very easily overheat a duckling with a lamp (red bulbs especially). The best way to tell how your duckling is adjusting to the temperature is to see where they sit in the brooder. A duckling will sit directly under the heat when the brooder is cold, a duckling that is in a brooder with correct temperatures will sit just on the edge of the heat and a duckling that is overheating will sit in the far corners away from the heat.

hmm I see…we do have a thermometer but we keep it in the middle (I’ll move it to the side of bulb) and although we do have a lizard and thus a variety of bulbs the only bulb that worked was a red one, it’s hooked up to another thermometer that turns it off when it gets to 35 (I’ll turn this down). My duckling usually stays in the middle or the side with her food (no bulb) and moves around quite a lot. Thank you again :) I just haven’t gotten used to duckling haha
