Discovered our first egg! But.........

BigDaddy'sGurl :

I politely disagree with much of what you said...many of the hybrid types of chickens, such as black stars (which the OP has) lay very early, as that was one of the purposes of that breeding. If you read through this forum, you will often find pullets laying at 19, 18, even 15 weeks of age! And it isn't a "dud" type of thing that often...they will often be irregular in the beginning, but once a hen begins to lay, you can typically count on her to repeat the performance in the relatively near future...say maybe a week or less.

Oh, well I meant Other than Hybrids. I knew that Hybrids did lay earlier, but I didn't know they could be up to 15 weeks earlier. Well, I guess ya learn something new everyday.

I have 4 18 wk old pullets left from the pre easter hatch. I sold the other 4. Any how I didn't expect any eggs this early and if I did I would have bet it would have been for the leghorn cross. But lo and behold the Orp is the first to lay a small pullet yesterday and one again today. So you can't always go by what is the norm.

My black sex link laid a soft shell egg, then about 2 days later a small but hard shelled egg then it was about 4 days before I got another egg. Now it is fairly regularly with a day off here and there. She started at 16 weeks. I have a black australorp and buff orpington of the same age, almost 18 weeks now, and still nothing from them.

after i got my first egg(courtesy of my beautiful barred rock, Periwinkle) it was about 4 or 5 days till we got our next one and since then we have been getting eggs nearly every day (we have gotten six eggs total now!) 3 of my girls are laying right now they are my barred rock Periwinkle, my dominique Peony and my australorp Calliope. will be expecting eggs from my buff orpington Calyx soon hopefully!

How old are you chickens?

To answer swmalone, by sex linked are about 17 weeks and the Americaunas are 16 weeks.

It has been really hot here, with a heat index over 100, so I know the ladies are not liking the heat. So, I'm hoping that may be why I haven't seen anymore eggs since Sunday. But then again, from what everyone is saying, this is probably normal when they start.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll let you know when we get more eggs.
