Discovered something interesting when I fried three eggs today.

I got my very first eggs about one week ago, this morning I had about a half dozen. I decided to fry three of them for breakfast. All three of them were double-yolks.

I'm new to this, so perhaps that's not that unusual. I have heard of double yolks before, but it just seemed kind of weird to have three out of six eggs be that way! I haven't checked the rest yet.

How fun! I love double yolkers because i love the yolks the best.

Double-yolkers are usually laid by new layers - kind of a product of their hormones and egg-making equipment still getting it together. So, yes it's unusual for the very first three eggs to ALL be double-yolkers, but if it was going to happen, now would be the time. Enjoy them while you have them!

Actually, I thought they were pretty "large" for first eggs. Seemed like regular sized eggs you'd find in any supermarket, which, in my understanding usually first eggs are pretty small. Some of the other eggs were much smaller, those I haven't used yet.

What kind of hens do you have? I've got some GLW and a Speckled Sussex, and a couple of BO, and they just started laying.....their eggs are pretty small! I was surprised because they're such big hens. Then the other day, I got an egg that was really tiny, but perfect looking. It was probably the size of a regular sized jelly bean.

When I bought these back in April from a farm store, I asked what they were, expecting a really neat technical name.....like the way other chickens are named (Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Reds, ....). I asked, "What are the names of these chicks?" They are called "brown-egg layers".

Oh, how original.

lol..... Anyways, I got curious about if perhaps they really did have a "nicer" name and I believe they are called "Black Stars". I could be wrong, but they REALLY look like Black Stars.

I don't know what GLW stands for....? I am REALLY new to chickens. Really. I don't know what half the abbreviations mean, yet.

Mine are about 5 months old and just started laying about a week ago. I was really surprised at how big the very first egg was. But some of the subsequent eggs have been very small. Oh my gosh, the size of a jelly bean!? That is incredible! Did you take a picture of it? I'd love to see a picture of that sitting next to a quarter.

I want to expand my flock, but I will force myself to wait until after winter. I live in Iowa and we can have nasty winters. This will be my first winter with chickens. I want to go through one before I start adding to my flock.

Dontcha just love having chickens!?

Double yokers are pretty common when hens first start laying. You may continue to get them until the hen's cycle gets regulated. My DH was so excited about the doubles! BTw, congrats on your first batch of eggs!

I do love having them! My oldest hens are probably a year and a half, so I'm kinda new too. Black Stars are AWESOME at producing eggs! You were lucky to get them. GLW is Golden Laced Wyandotte.

Chickens are so addicting! I started off with three chicks and a pretty small coop, and now I've got a good sized hen house, and 19 chickens....I don't know how that happened!

I am technologically challenged. I will try and get a pic of that tiny egg for you.....(I'm so dumb about this darned computer.)

Iowa gets really cold? I'm also geographically challenged!

Here in Ohio, it didn't get super cold, but we got so much snow, I had to dig a path to the hen house, and then I had to dig them an area to walk around in. They were TERRIFIED of that white stuff! It was my first winter too, and I was SO NERVOUS about it! I'm such a mother hen! haha

I'm going to try and get you that pic.......

Nice to talk with you,
Sharon

I have 6 black sex link. They are beautiful. But if you want the BEST sex link........friendliest and best egg....get the red stars. They are the best imo. Congrats on the double yokers!

I will definitely be on the look out for some of those, next spring. I just LOVE my Black Stars, but they are my very first chickens so I don't have anything to compare to. They follow us around the acreage and talk to us all the time. Even my husband is warming up to them.
