I noticed a sick house sparrow who died within a day of noticing...I am assuming salmonella because many years ago my mom had an experience with the disease at her bird feeders and this bird behaved they way those did, including diarrhea. We had the dead birds tested and that's what it was...so fast forward...

I immediately moved my turkey pen, bleached all food and water containers and have been trying to figure out a way to prevent these scrounge of the earth from getting into the food. I can't move the duck pen and I tried to clean up any food but the wild birds are hanging out there.

I plan on feeding the turkeys inside a closed horse trailer in the morning and at night and then NOT putting any food out, but that isn't realistic long term. Also, the wild birds land on the water sources, too.

I swear I saw another sick wild bird. I am terrified my ducks, ducklings, and turkeys have been exposed. I LOVE my turkeys, they are pets, and I know that the first sick bird I saw was on their feeder, which I immediately cleaned, but still...I am sure the sparrow was probably there for days before it showed symptoms. I try not to leave a lot of food around, but all it takes is a few crumbles here or there...

I will call the vet tomorrow to see if there is anything I can have on hand in case the ducks/turkeys show any signs of illness, but what can I do to keep these sparrows out? Now that my birds are exposed, are they doomed? What are the first symptoms to look for, BEFORE it's too late? I know other birds can carry disease, but right now I HATE house sparrows! If I could hit them out of the sky with a tennis racket I would!
