Disection of girly parts, Eggbound Hen : GRAPHIC

wow is it all the same breed that is doing this? can you trace it to genetics from on hen or a roo even? it is very strange that so many of your chooks have this problem I wonder why....

This girl was a Barred Rock and I don't have a clue where from.. I assume from the local hatchery here in michigan.. I got her in may from a friend who was selling off all of his kids layers.

no I am sorry I was asking speckledhen it is not uncommon, but she has been having a lot of problems with it so I was wondering.

You say the egg was covered by a membrane outside of the shell? One of our hens laid an egg that this reminded me of. It was a normal size egg, but, when we cracked it open, there was a fully formed tiny egg inside. It had a yolk and white but no shell. It was about the size of a large jellybean, maybe a little bigger. It was covered by a membrane. Maybe your egg was stuck in the hen and her body just started making another covering around it?
Very informative post, thanks a lot!
Here is a post that I found that has illustrations on chicken anatomy:

Kassy that was all from one hen. I have removed the same stuff from several hens, inside the oviducts and inside the abdomens.

My hens who have died from this same thing are: 2 RIRs, 3 SLWs, 1 GLW and now, the two I feel are going the same way are one BR and one Buff Orp, all from the same hatchery.

Ok you two gals have taught me something I really didn't need to know LOL!!!! You lost me after the pic of the big brown egg. Those pics are cool though and will be really useful if I ever have to do a post mortem. Keep up the good work.

WOW, All i can say is i am STARVED... all that fun stuff. .just makes me wanna go get some chinese food... So.. ya think that the egg got blocked up in the tubiethingy? technical term. so.. if it was blocked by?__________fill in the blank. Twisted gut? obstruction? tumor?(s). I would love to see the comments from the VET doc.
