Disinfecting An Old Coop

Yes, OSB is a problem. It's not meant to stand up to moisture or be an exterior material. Google "Painting OSB" and look at a few sites to get an idea of what you are dealing with. It's going to take several coats of paint and the cut edges are an issue. They are not sealed at all once you cut them and once moisture gets in the material is toast. It swells and you cannot glue it back together.

As long as it hasn't started deteriorating yet it is not hopeless but you need to get busy. Even the holes where you have screws or nails need to be sealed.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

This coop was almost entirely OSB and much of it is in very good condition. I think the former owner weather sealed a lot of it. He even used it for the roof, which had tar paper and shingles. I was thinking to apply extra weather seal and maybe buy new plywood for the roof, because I have read OSB isn't good for it.

Thank you, all.

Thank you! I had imagined spraying it down with lysol, etc. I will be picking it up from someone today, so I don't have any pictures of my own yet. It doesn't look painted at all in the seller's pics.
Girlfriend...... you know Lysol spray cans go for like $80 or something ridiculous on Ebay right now, right?!! People are actin' crazy during this pandemic.

A deodorant "shocker"/"bomb" product that has chlorine dioxide in it should dry-disinfect the coop very well plus kill any mold and fungus. It uses chlorine dioxide gas rather than a liquid.

Chlorine dioxide is the active ingredient in Oxine AH, which is commonly used for disinfection of poultry facilities.

You can get one that is labeled for use in a room or in a car. One brand is at www.homedepot.com/p/Biocide-Systems-Auto-Shocker-11g-Chlorine-Dioxide-Odor-Eliminator-3213/205883850.

You should do a decent cleaning of the coop, and then get the product started according to instructions. Close up the coop tightly for however long the instructions say (usually up to 24 hours).

In some dilution levels and conditions, Oxine chlorine dioxide liquid solutions can be used with animals present, but "shocker"/"bomb" products are much more concentrated and should NEVER be used with animals or people remaining in the area. Also, the coop should be aired out (up to 30 mins) before re-entry.
