Dislocated toe

My hen dislocated her middle toe, the knuckle furthest from her body. Her skin was not broken, just swollen and warm where it popped out. We made a splint for her with cotton swabs and electrical tape. Today when I went to check on her, she had gotten the splint off and it was popped out again and now the knuckle skin is slightly bloody from her toe bending the wrong way. We put antibiotic cream on it and did another splint.
My question is, are we doing the right thing? If the splint keeps popping off then the toe will keep popping out which will prevent it from healing. I'm afraid to not splint it and have the toe keep popping out and rip the knuckle skin more. Help!!
