Dispatched my first bird today.

Well I dispatched my first chicken today. It was a young game cockerel and I used the break neck method. I have to say it was really odd and unpleasant, but I got through it. I have a lot more respect for my food now!

I did bleed it. I hung it upside down to break the neck and then bled it out. It is in the fridge now and it is gonna be soup tonight when I get home!

I made soup of him, and I was really impressed. Much more flavor, and more meat than I really expected. I knew a game cockerel of about 20 wks would not have too much meat, but I assumed it would be comparable to little cornish hens you buy at the grocery store. So, the other day I made soup out of one of those just to see what to expect. This game cockerel was indeed comparable to that but better both in terms of amount of meat and flavor.

Now i am sold on raising my own birds for meat as well as eggs! Woohoo!
