My guys will be out free all day so not much to worry about with the heat, though we do get 100 plus days with crazy humidity. My neighbors chickens look funky in the dead of summer and dont lay as much. I didnt think about sand , at least you wont have to add grit for them. My coop was built with free wood and pallets so its not really the most sealed up place for them and the sand would be mostly under the coop in a few days. I mostly picked straw so it could fill the gaps and they can nestle up. Also I can do deepish litter with the straw and that creates some heat. As long as the chickens are happy and healthy you are doing it right in my book
