Yep, I caught a couple of them in mid "fluff the feathers" . They really are nice looking birds. We also collect the feathers and use those for craft projects.
Notes: The weather here is finally starting to act more like summer, so I have now turned the brooder light off except if the temps drop over night. They have taken to this change with no problems, and are doing very well. I marked all 15 chicks this week so that I can make sure to continue weighing the same chicks from now on.
Average Weight: 6.20 oz - Average chick weight doubled since first entry. Weight Range: 4 oz - 10oz
Obsevations: The 2 black chicks are greatly out sizing the other chicks at 10 oz each. Half of the chicks fall within 5.5-6 oz range. Only 3 of 15 chicks are <5.5 oz
Feed: I am estimating that they have consumed 30-40 lbs of feed.
I saw some of her (Zepher) birds yesterday when I picked mine up.. They are very nice sized and we were all standing around the processing table saying how much we'd all like to try them.. Maybe even getting some more corn in the diet for some good yellow fat.. maybe it will work.. As with the CX we just don't have them long enough to do so.. Eating my first home grown CX tonight for dinner..
of growth and moving them out into the freezer and the range birds for overall quality. I will be trying some next spring as well as sticking with the CX (if we like whats on the table tonght)
Just curious.. If I were to put pepper, garlic and some olive oil in their food each day, would the be pre seasoned?

if you finish your birds out feeding with a good amounts of herbs, yes, you will.
edited to add: and you get the added benefit of TONS of antioxidants! for you and your flock.
As I know they would get a different flavor.. but will they come through to the meat the way we want them to? or will it be just a tainted funky flavor..
But hey,, I will try anything once to learn the results..
Average Weight: 10.5 ounces Largest: 1 lb (both Black Chicks) Smallest: 8.5 oz Range: 7.5 oz Weekly Average Increase: 70%
Observations: Most of the chicks are now 50% featherd. It was difficult to find my finger paint marks on the darker chicks as the back of their heads are already starting to feather. The 2 Black Chicks in the group are still the largest at 1 lb each. All chicks were 9.5 - 10.5 oz except 1 at 9oz and the 2 larger chicks at 1 lb.
New Information: I had a voicemail from S&G when I called with a few questions. Dixie Rainbows are a "true breed" not a hybrid. I was surprised to hear this, but I saved the voicemail as proof.
That was very exciting news to hear as I have wanted to find a meat breed that I could breed myslef without being as dependant on the hatcheries. I guess we will know next year how well it works. As an added note the pullets lay an average if 165-170 eggs per year. Not bad for a "meat" breed in my opinion.
