After a long summer day in the Florida heat, our chickens water dishes empty and dirty quickly. We knew we needed a bigger water dish and needed one to be elevated to keep it clean, so we came up with an idea. Our previous hanging dishes on the side of the coop stay pretty clean, but difficult because you have to bend down and basically walk inside the coop to access it.
So here is our final product: a sliding drawer water trough with an optional sliding food dish.
To build it, We added a supporting wooden beam to the run enclosure close to the gate door. We secured a U shaped wooden base to the support beam. We bought a long steel deep cooking tray from a restaurant wholesale store which came with a plastic dish of the same size. We built the U shaped base to size for the metal tray and dish to slide in and out of.
Now we can easily access the water, extra feeder, and keep more water and ice, and food available to our precious chickies. They love it!
