DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

Hopefully there is a death somewhere in between the stunning and the plucking......    I think if there is a "coming to" during that process it automatically negates the humanity of the method.

I assumed that most folks would only pluck a dead chicken.

The electro stunning might do more than give the bird a peaceful death. The shock will not only stun the bird but it will contract the muscle tissue and squeeze out blood. With a quick slit to the throat, any adrenalin that would ordinarily be released with fear is now either not released or is flowing out into the drip bucket.

Medieval? I think not, the bird is there one minute alive and happy and then a sudden jolt renders it unconscious. This takes a matter of milliseconds, then before the bird comes to, it's ready to pluck.

Go stick your finger in a light socket for a second and come back and lets talk about it, LOL. And it takes more than that to "stun" which really means electrocute you or a bird. Stun is a delusion, electrocute is the word, and it is a horrific experience, good god you are going to kill it, dont torture it. After all it is for you, to make it easier to deal with. Whack its head with a cleaver, or hatchet, and it is instantaneous death for the bird. Yeah is is blood, but that is what meat is about. Man up or opt out. You are over thinking a simple thing, it isn't supposed to be pleasant for you or the bird it is what it is. I hate killing birds, but I love fried chicken. Good luck with it.

The commercial industry sometimes uses this method....used to run water into shallow trays that the birds were standing in and run electric current through it, sometime hang them upside down and their heads were in the water. It's not considered humane....

The electric shock is not what causes the death, it just causes the chicken to pass out. Death is caused when the chicken gets it's throat cut ant the blood drains from the body.

I have no reservation about killing a chicken, or shooting my dog should there be a cause to do so.

The only reason I would worry about stunning the bird before cutting its throat is if the meat would taste better to do it that way.

The electro stunner I saw used looked a really good tool, bird went out like a light (pun not intended lol), throat cut, bled out, plucked, done.

If an electro stunned bird doesnt have its throat cut it will revive a little while later. Electrocuted birds? Not so much!

I got one of those electric fly swatters one summer and went round the house zaaaapping flies and putting them into a nice pile to count later. Imagine my surprise when I went back after lunch to count them and found them ALL GONE!!!

Seems they got better!

I dont need to look up electrocution, I know all too well what it is. I have been hit by high voltage it is an evil feeling, the only thing that might be worse is fire, and electricity might beat fire as far as torture. I also know you cant readily control the outcome of running a big jolt of power through a bird. It is inhumane and you say it would taste better??. A big no there but I think arguing about it is not productive.

If you drop the bird in a cone and cut its throat, or even more humane whack its head with a cleaver it is so so easy.

I believe the word stun is used to sugar coat the processing of electrocuting chickens the, but that doesnt make it a better idea. Don't over think it whack it and done. Electricity is evil, your birds, your life, your choice, do it however you want. I have been chicken killin for almost a half a century, LOL. I will always whack the head with a cleaver, fast, humane, and instantaneous.

I was told this by a Tyson processing plant worker in Arkansas, he said it sounds better to the public, PETA and other groups to say stun. I think that stun is candy coating the fact that they are killed by the electricity. If you think differently I dont care to argue, you are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. Me I will be chicken killing with my cleaver, killing is always ugly, but it is what it takes to eat. I would rather do it myself than to get it out of a factory or some of the newly USDA approved imported from china chicken.

What Tyson does or does not do processing their birds is up to them and the USDA.

If you want to use a hatchet, a guillotine, a pair of pruning shears, or what ever method you want as far as I'm concerned it is your choice and I don't have a problem with it.

With that said, here is my position. If I am going to go to the trouble of raising a bird I want the technique used to dispatch the bird to be as stress free as possible to the bird, as it is my understanding that if you kill a bird that is stressed then the meat quality will suffer. I don't know for sure if there is any difference between taking a bird out of a cage slipping it quickly into a cone and slitting it's throat quickly induces enough stress to cause a stress problem with the meat, but if it did, then I can see that if you could stun the bird (rendering the bird unconscious) before killing him then that might very well be worth the effort.
