DIY Instructions for Very EASY heated waterer for under $20 bucks

ABSOLUTELY Perfectly!!!!!!!

We are in Michigan just 4 miles from Lake Michigan. It was below zero MANY nights and daytime highs hardly hit the teens for days at a time!

Heater and pump never failed!!!!!! Recently we had a day at about 40 degrees. I went out side just to check if the thermocube would turn off everything and it had!!!

This is the best winter time waterer in my opinion! I'll never use anything else!

By the way, we didn't have ANY heat in the coop either!!!!!
I know, I don't live too far from you, this winter was hard!

I see I never posted a picture of the waterer in action...... My chickens LOVE it!

I'm brand new to the chicken world (I was asked to rescue 4 full grown ladies) and wish I would've found this site sooner! :) So many things people didn't tell me!!

We plan to build the feeder you made (awesome sauce!!) but unlike the feeder, this waterer doesn't have step by step instructions/directions on how to assemble it. I'm super handy with all my power tools, but I get a little anxious if I don't have a simple instruction manual.. so to speak. LOL! I don't need heated, it hasn't dropped below 45F here in a couple months.. and I would probably use the extra fish tank heater I have in my shed, if I did need to heat the water. I simply need a little (large?!) water feeder that the ladies don't slush all their dirt into!! I have to go into the run every day and clean the waterers.. (I used old plant hangers to hang them on the side of the run) and while I love my time with the ladies, sometimes, like today, the time to care for them is spent caring for my main family unit.

Long story short, any chance you could give simple instructions to a newbie? Like, buy these parts, cut here, attach here w/ this glue/screw/whatever and go! Perhaps there's another thread somewhere that shows all the steps and I just haven't found it yet.. but I'm absolutely loving all the wonderful goodies everyone is sharing. :)

Glad to help you.........

Purchase 5 nipples for $13 off Ebay. Search "5 HORIZONTAL POULTRY - CHICKEN WATERING NIPPLES". There's only 1 guy that sells them.

Find any bucket, a drill and drill bit a little smaller than the screw-in-nipple (I don't know the size I just eye-balled it) - The ebay ad says a 3/8" drill bit.

Drill a hole about 1" to 1-1/2" off the bottom of the bucket. That way if there is any dirt that gets in the bucket it will sink and not plug the nipple.

Screw in the nipple. It's self sealing so it doesn't leak. Put the top on the bucket. Put the bucket on a brick or something to lift it a bit so the girls don't have to bend down to get it. Done!

Make sure to remove ALL other water sources when you introduce this new bucket. Tap the nipple a few times so they see you doing it and the water drip coming out..... then wait. Within 60 minutes they should figure it out!

If you have any other questions let me know. :)

Thank you SO much! I can't tell you how excited I am to get this done! Just ordered the nipples (thanks for the link chad-o!) and I'll be asking my friends to save their frosting bucket for us?

Thank you for all the info! We are definitely making these before we go on vacation and next winter! Such a pain to constantly keep checking food and water everyday. This would ease the stress of constant nagging for the kids to do their chores! Thank you! We have 6 chickens 1 year old and spoiled. We have 4 new chicks that we will be putting outside that are just as spoiled. My 13 year old holds then chickens like babies and the chickens just love her!

Should check in on birds every day anyway tho....make sure they are all OK.

But it sure would be nice to not have the water freeze up!!.....am training my birds to the HN this summer and plan to make this heated waterer next fall.
