DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

Haven't made it through the whole thread yet so this may be a repeat: A simple modification I made to a grow out cage I built for the 4 week old dorkings I had some drawer guides left over from a kitchen remodel job I did so I added it to the top to make a sliding access door. I don't have to have over-head clearance and can place containers on top while I add food and water.

I can't remember which distributor I called, but I asked if they would open for cleaning. They went out to their warehouse and checked. Told me there was no way to open them for cleaning which made me decide not to get it.

I had originally thought it might be a good option for heating water in the winter but if you can't open and clean them out it didn't seem like a good thing.

This is why I got all my chickens 2 gallon buckets. I can dump them out, add ice, and clean them easily, and can always see who needs water. It may be easier for you to give them warm water in the winter depending on your arrangements. I remember leaving an ax next to the horse's water because I needed it every day.

These are not inventions but they have worked so well for us. Here is our "L" shaped pvc feeder. It is made from 4" pipe. We didn't glue the fittings in. It is sturdy enough without the glue and then I clean it if necessary. I get zero waste feed (except that there's a mouse living in my coop with the chickens!). I have a screen door we made out of hardware cloth that we attached the feeder to with "garage organization" hooks (the ones for the pegboards, I think). We also did the 5 gallon pail thing with the screw in chicken nipples. I put a chicken killing cone on top to keep them from roosting on it, ha ha!

I am going to use this feeder Idea. Zero waste! I'm all about that!

You probably already know this but .... For what its worth Guineas and Turkeys need Game bird starter because they grow very fast. Game bird starter is higher in protien than chick starter. Guineas also can fly within about two weeks.

They all survived this beautifully. In temporary quarters now while we revamp an existing structure and dog runs into a coop and a run.

I love HF, too, but I've gotten a couple of bad things there. I got solar LED outdoor lights for the chicken yard. I liked that it stored energy and had a movement senser that came on with movement and go off a couple of minutes later. I bought 3. All 3 lasted a week or so. Got condensation in them. Not weather tight. I also got a reciprocating saw that wouldn't cut soft butter. Other things were great.

Sounds like everyone is in the same boat. Some good tools, some NOT good. And who wants to be the one to find the latter??
