We had an amazing Fire Fly season this year. They were so plentiful for a couple of weeks that you had to be careful where you stepped during the night. We do see them every year, but this year was a banner year for them here. It's one of the best times of year when they light up the ground, forests and fields. Pictures can never do them justice.
we were the same way here. i live deep in a valley, the hillsides almost looked like Christmas in the prime season.

hmmmm, I wonder if this means that they headed further north this year? And that is why you guys have record numbers and us guys in the southern us are seeing a decline or none at all?

Well...we had thousands of them last year, too. Last summer was our first full summer here so I can't attest to previous years. We hadn't moved into the house until the tail end of the previous summer, and the fireflies were gone by then.

I think habitat is an important reason for their decline. They were DEFINITELY most prevalent in our tall, overgrown grasses. I won't let my husband cut any of it down, lol.

Heres my invention for the week. I did not really have any breeding pens so here is the start of "The Love Shack"

For the roundness I used an old iron table top that will fit perfectly up in a four sided tree making it chest level and easy to clean out. The opening is part of a doggie play pen taken apart. For the top I took a bunch of stems from a crepe myrtle tree and bent them into hoops and tied on the palm fronds. Still has more to go but its a start. Still need to do water, feeder, perch and a box but I am trying to figure a way to do all of that and still leave enough space for loving time!

That is so clever!! I love it!! How well will the palm fronds keep out rain?
