I fill it to the edge of the hole, lower for water. They stick their whole head in, pick around, not too messy. The further down the food line gets the less they spill though, but I keep it filled high regardless for the bantam ( they still spill less than an open tray )
With taller birds like geese maybe you could put the holes in the lid.

You could also cut a small slit with an exacto knife starting the middle and cut with a sturdy pair of scissors. Those tubs are pretty soft.

I discovered peacock poop appears to be a combination of chicken poop and dog poop. Big and everywhere.

Yuk. I am not grossed out by chicken poop and the smell doesn't bother me, but dog poop, hum, not so good.

I put a brick or large stone in the water pan so chicks can climb out if they fall in.

That also keeps chickens from dumping their water.
