DNA sex test

At that lab It is $10 per test/bird (plus tax) iow 5 tests/birds would be $50 plus tax... at 10 tests they pay tax.

They can be done at any age you can find appropriate feathers to pluck, they all also do egg shells, or blood testing. You have to mail the samples to them. You can order kits from them which would include mailers, or use your own and print out their forms to send with them. There are links on the websites to the various forms and instructions.

Strange because I just used the lab a week ago and if you go to the correct web site you can read on and find that it IS ten dollars for 1 to9 samples given and not 10 dollars per sample. Go to the web site and if your on the correct site read on and you will see the price list in big bold letters stating that one to nine samples are 10. dollars and no tax for usa. Perhaps the above post was looking at a different lab??

I just checked the link again and scrolled down past the videos and yes in big bold letters 1 to9 samples are ten dollars. Not ten dollars per sample. I just did four of my silkies. and yes it WAS very much worth it!

I saw that too, but when you get to the order form it says "1-10 samples-$10.00 plus HST / each sample"

How did you fill out the order form? and how did you send the samples? I'd love to get multiple birds tested for only $10.

I got seprate envelopes and just banded each chick with different colors and plucked a few feathers from each chick one envelope at a time and labled each envelope according to the leg band color. Example would be like buff blue(that meant the buff with the blue leg band) and buff green ( the buff with the green leg band . and buff red( the buff with the red leg band) and buff non meaning( the buff without any leg band. ) the feathers were plucked on each chick and immediately put into a seprate envelope and labled . then go to the next chick and pluck then put into seprate envelope and lable so their is no confusion do one at a time. When all the samples are done put those seprate envelopes into a bigger envelope and mail off the samples. I regret mailing mine regular mail and not expiditing the mail because that is what takes the longest. However once it arrives it only took about two days to get the results.so if you rush the mail then you won't have to wait as long for it to arrive like I did. Always give a few feathers each chick incase something happens to spoil a feather that way they can choose the best sample. They will email the results although I got impatient and called. The results will come like this example : buff green female/ buff blue male/ buff red female / buff non male. They will go with the exact names you lable each sample with. The leg bands worked out really well because they are left on the birds until after you get the results and you can sort out the males and females then. This last time I did this I had my breeder do the samples because I was not wanting any males.so I taught her how to do it and she mailed off the samples for me. I ended up with out of the five birds I tested getting two confirmed females and three males. The breeder then kept the males because I only wanted females and sent me the females. Leg bands still on matching the results.i ask any breeder I go through now to do this for me after having a awful expirence of having to RE home several males a couple years ago. It was heart breaking and difficult. I find most breeders are willing to do this because they benifit as well knowing who is male . I pay for the testing I explain the process and they are Aware I won't be purchasing the male birds. After they understand what a very easy process it actually is most have been more than willing to do this for me. As I said they benifit as well.Im wanting another female at least so likely I'll be testing another four or five. I found this process after being sold several roosters and raising and loving them only to find them crowing soon. Where I live I can't have roosters so it really was a heart break to have to re home so many babies that I've grown attached to. Also it was no easy task!! So I did some reasearch on sexing and came across the DNA. I've used this method ever since. I've tried different labs along the way but they are basically all the same. Now when I buy I dna all babies that I buy. For people who can NOT keep roosters this is a excellent way to purchase babies. As for the cost of the dna I gave the breeder 20 dollars per bird because we were unsure of which lab we were going to use. (She ows me some money back) even at 10 dollars per bird that is half the cost of most labs. For me and people who can't have roosters ten dollars per bird is quite worth it. when she was recommended this lab from a friend I went to the web site and assumed it was ten dollars for one to nine birds as it read but just found out it did in fact cost 10 dollars per bird. (She still owes me the remainder of the money I had sent) I didn't want to have to go through the rehomming of roosters again so it was very much worth the ten dollars to find my females. So basically it comes down to your situation weather or not its worth it to you. I know each silkie chick costs only about 20 dollars per chick for show quality stock and that's half the price of a chick but having to rehome all those roosters after raising and getting attached to them was not easy and very heart breaking for me. So like I said its personal weather or not its worth it to you or not. I'm not a wealthy person however however it was worth the ten dollars per bird for me to ensure I got females. I do apologize for the confusion I had on the cost. Its because I had given the 20 dollars per sample and got confused after reading the price list on the web site.if you do choose this lab do rush the shipping of the samples because that's what takes the longest time. Once recieved its only about two days for results. I hope this helps you out and explains things. For me and folks like me who can't have roosters its very much worth it. also if your only going to be keeping the females I find it very much worth knowing the sex of the birds as babies. Hope this helps. I think its a really great way to sex your birds espically silkies who are so difficult to sex. I wish you the best of luck. Please keep me posted on weather or not you decide to test. Best wishes

I know of a lab that tests 1 to 9 birds for ONLY ten dollars!! No tax.i use the lab called Accumetrics here is the link www.accu-metrics.com/avain.php
its as simple as plucking a few chest feathers and sending them off in the mail. This lab serves world wide. I'm in California and just used them to sex my silkie babies. I recommend watching the video on their site about how to feather test. then I HIGHLY recommend you expedite the shipping. Because that takes the longest. Once the sample arrives its only takes about two days for results. Your welcome to private message me with any questions you may have. I identified the chicks with colored leg bands so a example of a sample would say feathers from buff green (the one with the green leg band) or feathers from buff blue. Then a example of the results would say buff blue male or buff green female. This way you won't get confused on who is who. I always pluck about three feathers from the chest of each baby. This way if a sample gets fouled for some reason they have some spare feathers to use. Each sample is in its own envelope and labled . hope this helps you out!! Only ten dollars for 9 samples is a incredible bargain.no reason not to test them!! I'm happy I got two girls out of my four tested. :)
Where the results accurate?
