Is there a registry that does breed gene markers for specific breed charactertistic traits? Not sure if a swab method would work on birds? Thought the how too videos might be entertaining lol...

How do the breeders choose? is it visual only ?

You can have some genetic testing done Usually people buy their birds based on the genes they want/desire, but there is a lot that can't be easily validated just by looking. Most people only test for genetics if they aren't sure if the bird they have actually carries the trait they want, or not.

At The Silkie Lab, I do DNA Sex Testing on many species, along with Antigen testing for Mareks and ALV, and I test for the Lavender Gene. Within a month or so, I will also be releasing testing for the Blue Egg Gene, and the Recessive White Gene.
