DNA tests for the blue egg gene, shipping samples to Germany

I shipped the package of feathers today for almost $40 via USPS international mail. I have a tracking number that should show it all the way through to the destination.

The process for an international shipment is to fill out a customs declaration form which is provided by the post office. I put my address as Sender, Justus Liebig University's address as the destination to the attention of the veterinary genetics department. The description is for two packs of Sterile Bird Feathers sterilized at 160C for 30 minutes.

I expect the package to be delivered in 2 or 3 weeks. Processing the samples will take another 3 or 4 weeks. This puts the timeline to the first week of April for results.

Current tracking shows the package of feather samples departed Miami International airport this morning at 7:52 a.m. In two days, it moved from my location to Birmingham AL, Montgomery AL, West Palm Beach FL, Opa Locka FL, and then to Miami International distribution facility. That is a journey of about 1000 miles.

And the results!

G = geen (blue) eggshell allele
W = wild type allele

As you can see above roosters 24, 29, and 30 are GG which means I have 3 homozygous blue egg roosters to breed from. More important, I can get rid of roosters 5, 23, 26, 33, 84, and 86 which do not have a blue egg gene! Talk about putting my breeding program on steroids.......

Will you use the GW's for breeding?
