Do Barred Rocks get broody

I have a trio of barred rock hens who are giving a egg aday. i have started leaving the eggs in the nest box the last 3 days now have 9 eggs. i am whishing one will get broody an start setting from having all the eggs in the nest box. we had barred rocks as a kid but i dont remember them going broody. i do remember grandma always had a couple old game hens that was always broody.

Any chicken can go broody some are just more likely than others.I don't think barred rocks are known for it.Also you only need 6 eggs for them to go broody.

I would suggust getting a hen of breed known for it's broodieness and have her hatch them.I pesonally would do something like Orphington not a game bird since the Game birds are known for being mean.

The broody hens are them fighting chicken ones. It will sit on any egg.

yeah that's what i was thinking. grandma always had one maybe two game hens to brood her eggs. she would let them start setting then steal the eggs and replace with her barred rock or Rhode island reds. they made great mothers and would defend the chicks really well. I have been flogged by them many times out at grandma's as a kid trying to catch a baby chick. but would of rather been flogged by the hen than grandma if she caught us messing with her chickens.

Well I was on here wondering if I should take the egg pile away from my barred rock flock. After reading a bunch of posts I decided to give up on them going broody...well I found TWO hens sharing the nest of 18 eggs. HAHAHA I had to remove them from the flock because the other girls kept laying on them. Now Yesterday I went to check on them in the shed and found a chick, this morning another had just hatched. I'm hoping between the two of them they will be able to manage the different hatch dates.....

If they go broody they will sit on NOTHING... for weeks. I don't think you can make them go broody, if they do then give them eggs. Hatchery BR I would not think would go broody, my Blue Rocks and Blue Barred Rocks will go broody... not often, but they will. I think Heritage rocks would be more likely than hatchery.

Plymouth rock have all the qualities I'm looking for except for being broody, should I get anther hen to hatch or wait it out and watch chit one too go broody? How likely are they to want to stay with their eggs?

Among other things, on 28 April I bought 15 BR chicks (pullets) from Cackle hatchery, and now, on 30 Nov (7 months later) despite the freezing weather in WV and having small pullets egg, a broody BR just hatched 11 chicks and she still has 3 unhatched eggs to go. And that's not all because I have yet another broody BR who will hatch other chicks in the next 10 days... AAAND not to mention I've just had to break the third BR broody pullet because I cannot have in winter 3 sets of chicks going at the same time.

So yeah... some BR do go broody. lol

PS. The chicks in the pics are 10 BR x SS mutts I've had to temporary take them away from their momma because some chicks hatched on day 20 and some on day 22 and I did not want to starve the older ones. I've left the broody on her nest with 1 newly hatched chick and 3 piped eggs. Fingers crossed :>

Even though they do go broody i personally have only had one hen go broody in 4 years .... my wyandottes are super broody
