Do Chickens Care What Color The Inside Of Their Home Is?

My coop is a lined with political lawn signs...patriotic red, white and blue...the girls don't seem to mind. (great insulation) After "expressing" their political views while roosting, the signs are easily replaced with my handy staple gun. You can see the coop on my page.

Well of red and white are bad colors somebody forgot to tell my chickens cause we did both in this coop. And they don't seem to mind at all. I've another one that's pink inside. The white I think helps with winter laying as it draws in more light.

I wouldn't paint the inside of the coop. My birds were getting up on my deck and peeling and eating the paint, until I was able to get a gate up to keep them off. A lot of paints are full of toxins and could make them sick, or even kill them.

I painted the inside of mine a light color with white on the ceiling. The insides of the nesting box are dark. I have the light on a dimmer switch so I can turn the light down to the lowest setting at night. I can look out my window in the house and see into the window of the coop and see them on the roost.....just barely, but the light color on the walls helps. I can check on them without even going outside.

Short answer, I don't think chickens really have a preference for what color the inside of the coop is, painted, unpainted, light, or dark. That said, I feel like lighter colors would probably be better than darker colors simply because I know that lighter colors make me feel brighter and happier in the dark winter months. There have been plenty of studies showing that light colors make mammals less stressed during the winter months and that they are more soothing/relaxing and I somehow doubt that there is that big a difference in what makes mammals and birds tick when it comes to colors and mood elevation. I used a beigey-tan color that we bought way way too much of when we remodeled the bathroom on the inside of the coop. I painted all of the walls and the nest boxes the same color. I could see the advantage of painting the nest boxes a darker color, but my girls certainly don't mind (though it may help that there are no windows opposite the nest boxes so they are shadowed compared to the rest of the coop).

I painted one o my coops sky blue ~ which was semi gloss white paint mixed with some left over navy blue. The nest boxes are hot pink "Oops paint" I found really cheap at the hardware store.

The other coop is sunny yellow with navy blue nest boxes.

I painted them colors that I enjoy seeing every day and the semi gloss paint helps to seal the wood and makes cleaning a bit easier.
