I am getting my chicks next week, I can hardly stand it!!
Anyway, this may sound dumb, but can you call your chickens, or a specific chicken and will it respond?

.

You could probably teach them to. Chickens will do almost anything for food.

Sure they'll come when called! Start out calling them every time you give them food. It won't take long and they'll come running, which is very handy if they wander too far.

Heck, mine come when I call the kids, the dogs, or just walk out to the car.

Psh, mine don't even need to be called.

- They'll come just at the sight of me. But, yes, I can have a couple of them come when called by name. And of course my young Ameraucana boys will come to me if I imitate their odd "lonely" calls. They're such sweethearts.

My babies are still in their brooder but when I put their food in I always say "chick...chick...chick". (original huh?

I'm hoping they'll associate their food with my voice.

They come as soon as they see me--or at least as soon as they see the red treat can in my hand.

Mine didn't respond to their names when they were chicks. But, now that they are hens, a couple of them actually DO respond to their names. And, when I appear with the magical seed-cup, they ALL respond by running and flying (yes!) to me.

Sometimes all I have to do is stick my head out of the backdoor and they come running from everywhere in the yard.

I've made up a whistle call that they all respond to. If I can't see them or one has wondered off I do my whistle call and they always come running. I started doing this from very early on and they took to it quickly.

Mine respond to me and/or the truck. The big roo, Chili, comes out and gives me the stink eye till I come up with the goods.
